About
Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert, spun out of the MIT Leg Laboratory, headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, and is the originator of robot motion control technology. Ownership changed hands multiple times - Google (2013), SoftBank (2017), Hyundai Motor (2021, about $1.1B for 80%) - and on July 16, 2026 Hyundai acquired SoftBank's roughly 9.65% stake to reach 100% ownership. Products include the Atlas humanoid (the electric mass-production version unveiled at CES 2026: 1.9m / 90kg / 56 DoF / 50kg payload, integrating Google DeepMind foundation models, RaaS subscription model), the Spot quadruped robot (the world's most mature commercial quadruped, covering inspection, construction, hazardous environments, and more), and the Stretch warehouse logistics robot. Technical Approach
Shifted from hydraulic to fully electric, with modular design (360-degree rotating joints, replaceable parts) to cut manufacturing and repair costs. Design philosophy of 'aliens in the factory' - robots need not fully imitate humans and can become superhuman (the production version learned consecutive backflips). Deep cooperation with Google DeepMind to build the world's most advanced robot foundation models.
